Crow's Nest quilters turn scraps into strips

Crow's Nest (Queensland) quilters gathered at the local State School for one of Kathy's "Scrap Happy" workshops earlier this month (March 2011).  They quickly got the hang of using the Accuquilt Studio cutter to turn their fabric collections into an array of 2 1/2 inch strips, Dresden Plate blocks, squares and various other blocks using KoolKat's set of dies for the cutter.  Another great time was had by all, and there will soon be a batch of great quilt projects underway at Crow's Nest.

Queensland Quilt Show

First and second places in the professional - commercially quilted section of the 2009 Queensland Quilters Inc. annual show went to Judi Bellingham (above) for "Taking leaf of my senses" and Vicki Jarrett for "Summertime in Iluka." This completes the hat-trick: Kathy quilted winning quilts for Karen Mersiades in 2007 and Robyn Mallett in 2008 in this same section. Also in 2008, Kathy quilted the Qld Quilters Inc raffle quilt which won Best in Show at the Brisbane RNA Exhibition, and the Toowoomba Quilters Inc. raffle quilt which won 3rd place in the group/collaborative quilt section of the same show. 2009 also saw the first outing by KoolKat as vendors at the Brisbane Craft and Quilt show.

Quick-set Jelly quilts

It has been busy, busy, busy for Kathy and Geoff at KoolKat Quilting. Geoff has now completed his first 12 months full-time working at KoolKat and he says he's enjoying the experience. Having some help in the quilt room has meant Kathy has had time to pursue her love of design. Several quilt patterns have emerged so far, with Quick-set Jelly (above) being one of these. However, it takes some time before the designer sees the final result - completed quilts made by customers returning to KoolKat for quilting. Just this past week, three Quick-set Jelly quilts came back to us. Sharon (left) and Paula (centre) used a Hoffman's Bali Pop which is the equivalent of a jelly roll of fabric to make their quilts. The bali pops are available from KoolKat or most quilt and fabric suppliers. The right hand side quilt was made by Coolum Quilters after a visit by KoolKat to their club where we presented a quilt voucher to the club as a way of saying thank you for our visit.
