on grief and guilt . . .

My darling daughter wrote a blog entry today that touched my heart. I asked if I could share it on my blog, and she graciously agreed.

To me, it was interesting to note that guilt (even in the midst of my own grief) was no respecter of persons. I've had to guard carefully against it, because it's neither healthy or helpful. Why did guilt reach for me? Oh, there were lots of angles it took, but I won't go into that here and now.

Jocelyn created her blog a little over a year ago, and at first she sporadically shared funny teaching stories and the like. Since Everett's death, though, she's been more consistent and has used it as an outlet to her thoughts and prayers during this grieving/recovering process. I often read her blog with awe, wondering how she manages to so eloquently express her deepest thoughts.

But then, enough of this proud mom's babble . . . go read for yourself . . .

Prone to Wander.

no surprise here . . .

I saw this on the Quiltville! blog and immediately checked it out. The result?

Only 80%?!? Not all that surprising to me. (And probably not to people that know me best, like my darling husband. One of my first questions to him at the end of the day is generally, "Did you read my blog?!) I have a fairly good sense that I'm not alone, either . . !

This weekend will be fairly quiet -- I'll spend most of tomorrow finishing curtains and bumper pads and quilts for the new nursery. If I have time, I'll also zip up the two blocks for the P&S BOM! Anything I don't finish on Saturday, I'll have the opportunity to finish on Monday. It's a holiday and Kim will be off, so I won't get to spend my day with Sawyer. Boo!!! I'll have to console myself with sewing, old movies, and chocolate. Seriously -- I think I'm having grandbaby withdrawals! So I'll swap my Sawyer-boo photos for finished product photos. :)

In the meantime, a last look at our lovely snow event. Truly our area has not known how to deal with the snow & ice -- city and county schools have been out ALL WEEK! Tomorrow, though, day time temps are supposed to get up into the 50's and rain is in the forecast for early next week. From snow to flash flooding, no doubt!

As of yesterday evening, though, this was the road leading out from the camp. I took this after I'd come down it, heading home last night. Let me just say that had I wanted to stop on the way down, I would not have been able. I tried. *shudder*

This is the pasture to the side of that snowy road -- something about a field blanketed with snow drifts is just breathtaking to me!

Even the sun-kissed hills are holding on to their snowy covers!

In another week, it'll all be MUD-kissed!

yay for fridays!

I've got lots to share, but not really the time to do it today. So it'll wait!

In the meantime, I know I've mentioned that I wanted to make a bunch of the darling aprons that were featured on Prairie Moon Quilt's blog (click HERE to see her tutorial for yourself). So I've been trying to find cute outlines that will kind of fit into the themes I'm wanting to do. Just been playing around and came up with . . .

I loved the little seahorse - anyway, I thought it was cute!

Attended my first guild meeting last night, since ... July? Wow! Last night was our bi-annual auction. And even though I've been a member of our guild for several years, it was the first auction I've been to. It was *lots* of fun! There was a lot of stuff . . . a LOT of stuff . . . and sometimes bidding got a little (how can I say this delicately?) . . . CRAZY! :)

I came away with some terrific buys -- a lot of really fun Christmas fabric, and some tea fabrics, and a LOT of quilting stencils! It was a happy night, and it was fun to hang out with the guild gals again!

I'll wrap this up with a few photos of one of my most favorite things . . .

So serious!

So studious!

So bonhomous!

So curious! And darling, darling, darling!

He makes my heart smile.

eq & the generosity of friends . . .

Yesterday I played around with that Christmas table topper, mentioned my color/fabric dilemma, asked for input, and got it! One dear blogger friend, Pat, from A Little of This and a Little of Pat, didn't just make suggestions, she opened up her EQ7 and did a little playing around for me!

First, she replaced the cream with a green and sent me this one:

Then, at my request, she tweaked it just a tad and sent this one back. I love this!!! The holly fabric has just a hint of gold glimmer going through it; I think it would be pretty if the green did, too. Look, it even has the binding on it!

Then she just played around with the block and sent me three alternatives:

Of the alternatives, this last one is my favorite! I didn't realize how easy/fun/handy EQ was. I've never seen it used. I'm rather fascinated by the catalog of fabrics it has in its library. I think this convinces me that I'd like to have it! I may have to adjust my birthday list! :)

Pat thank you *so* much for doing this for me! I do hope today finds you feeling better!

And my son sent me a smile. I watched Sawyer on Saturday evening when they set him down with the book -- he turns the pages and everything! What a precocious rascal he is! And a reader, to boot -- gotta love it!

Moo, moo!

hop on over . . .

Got any plans for this evening? May I suggest you head on over, lickety-split, to the Little Pieces of My Life blog?? She's celebrating her 150th post, and she's doing so by giving away completed redwork blocks of Bunny Hill Design's SnowBound! Oh my, you all KNOW this is right up my alley!

But you really do need to hop on over there . . . she's shutting this one down soon!!!

Good luck -- to us all!!

ps -- I *did* make the homemade peach ice cream tonight. YUM!

weekend time!!

Interesting (?!?) events always seem to find me. Sometime Wednesday, at work, I was bitten by some thing. My first thought was that it was a mosquito or flea (we keep a cat in the office). It itched a little, but it looked of little or no consequence. Yesterday morning, there was a dark, purplish line in the center (about the size of a lead tip for a mechanical pencil), surrounded by redness, but it didn't really bother me at all. It got a little bigger as the day wore on, but not alarmingly big. This morning there was definitely a blister-looking thing at the center, and it was raised and hot. The red area was about 3" in diameter. The doctor said it's probably a spider bite -- either a brown recluse of a hobo spider. Nice! Hardcore oral and topical antibiotics for 10 days, and I go back Monday for him to look at it again. I have to laugh and shake my head!

Yesterday was a productive, albeit quiet, day. I worked on redwork block number five . . .

This one is, "Sawyer's First Day of School"! Have I mentioned how much I'm enjoying the stitching aspect of redwork?!? :)

Then I found time to peruse through the current issue of Quilter's Home magazine. I don't typically buy magazines ('cept for my beloved Tea Time), because of the RV space, but this one had several articles that I felt were "must reads," so I wanted to pick it up.

First of all there was this article on Julie Herman of jaybird quilts. Julie writes one of my favorite blogs (not just of quilting blogs, but of *all* the blogs I read). When she posted on her blog that this article was out, I knew I'd want to read it. It was a good one!

Plus, Anne Sutton of Bunny Hill Designs also was interviewed for an article in the magazine! I've enjoyed the Bunny Hill free block of the month patterns for the past two years. I knew I'd want to read this article, too!

And then I had a chance to flip through this book I finally picked up on crazy quilting . . .

Click on the photo for a direct link to this book on Amazon (where it was priced a LOT better than it was at Books A Million), and you can even thumb through the virtual pages!

In between all that, I also got my hair cut & styled yesterday. I haven't had anyone cut my hair since October, 2008. Not because it didn't need it, but because I hate having my hair styled. I've lived in Alabama for over 14 years and haven't yet found someone who can work magic with my hair! Anyway, yesterday I bit the bullet and went to the same stylist that my daughter used. My daughter was very pleased with how the stylist handled her hair, and since Joc has similar hair to me (lots of fine, board-straight hair that cannot hold a curl), I thought I'd be okay. She did a good job, but I'm not sure it's me. It looked pretty enough, but it sure took a lot of work! LOL! Perhaps when I wash, dry and style it on my own, I'll be okay. It does still go back in a clip and a ponytail, so for now I'm good.

This will be a quiet weekend while I keep my leg propped and antibiotics popped! And work on redwork!

TTFN!!

good excuses . . .

I've always wondered if, when put in a tough situation, I'd be able to honestly believe that God causes all things to work for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28).

What a praise and blessing that I am able to say, without a doubt, that not only could I say that, but I believed it with all my heart! And still do! My Lord has been so incredibly faithful to me over the past few days.

That being said . . .

Car wrecks are NO fun.

NO FUN!

I was involved in a two-car (two people) accident on Friday morning. Luckily, neither of us were life-threateningly hurt.

But . . . I was hurt, nonetheless.

I do have pictures, but I promise I won't show them! LOL! (Even though my daughter suggested I share the gruesome photos/details here.) Let's just say that there were things sticking through my ankle area that aren't supposed to show *outside* the skin. EVER!

Long story short? After a 30-minute surgery and closing things up on Friday, I have to go back for a second surgery in two weeks to have pins and assorted hardware put in place. I've always wanted to have a bionic body part! Not to mention that I'll have a legitimate reason to make airport security go off!

Plus, where the airbag hit my right forearm, it looks like the forearm blades from one of the X-Men heroes. Now if you can trade a car accident for super hero powers and bionic body parts, it's got to be okay, right?!?

As folks continued to come into my little portion of the ER and ask, "What happened?" my children -- who have been an incredible blessing throughout this ordeal -- finally hit upon, "She got attacked by a velociraptor . . . not sure yet whether or not it had rabies." Hey, it made me laugh!

I have a lovely walker to help me get around; no weight on that right foot for at least 12 weeks. TWELVE WEEKS! Ummm. Can we say summer, what, what?!?!

So, no work for a while, no driving for a while (and never driving again my darling little PT Cruiser #2), nothing more than lap quilting for a while; I will be doing lots of reading and surfing ... and enjoying any company that lends itself to visiting with me!!! I enjoyed several hours with my grandson this afternoon, in fact. Talk about GREAT medicine!

I guess I won't be doing much to blog about over the next little while.

But I'll check in and out!

:)

ho hum . . .

I have blog apathy right now.

I don't know why.

I've been doing lots and lots of cool things. Todd purchased tickets to Riverdance, the farewell tour, for me for Mother's Day and we went Tuesday night. It was awesome.

I thank everyone who voted for my quilt in last week's Quilting Gallery sponsored contest. I won! I got a $30 gift certificate which I quickly spent on Christmas fabric. :)

We've been walking most mornings, and it's like my own private good morning concert of birdsong, in surround sound. Plus the honeysuckle are in full bloom, along with the hedgerow, and it smells heavenly. (And I am *sucking wind* by the time we start up that hill, so I'm inhaling that fragrance deeply. So deeply I'm still catching the scent four, five hours later!)

The critters continue to come up Acorn Hill and to the corn in droves, making me laugh at their antics. There were deer and a raccoon up here this evening. A deer would get to close to the coon and he'd run the deer off. Silly things!

I was able to spend quite a bit of time with my darling grandson this past weekend. My heart just swells with love for that precious boy!

Finally I got the right ruler I need to the hexagon quilt a long. Monday will be a quilt-till-you-wilt day.

Work is work. TGTF.

A new whole foods type grocery opened in Huntsville this week. It's called Earth Fare. I plan on visiting it on Saturday morning.

All of the Movie Galleries in our area (in all areas, I guess) are going out of business. Their last rental day is Saturday, and then they're selling all of their stock. Just sayin'.

I started a new online Bible study this week. It's deep and intense and I'm excited about it.

I've even been taking lots of lots of pictures.

I am just tired. And I needed to note this for posterity.

Fin.

happy mother's day!!! :)

There are some folks for whom I'm profoundly grateful this Mother's Day, 2010 . . .
My beautiful mom being top on the list!!!

This year I have a *new* reason to feel especially celebratory on Mother's Day . . .
My darling Sawyer-bug!! Isn't he too cute? My son, an avid photographer, took this picture. He's actually got a blog up with selected pictures from his portfolio at Jameson Photography. He's pretty talented if I do say so myself! :)

And of course, there's my own darling children who've made it possible for me to be "Mom" for the past 24 years . . .

Jocelyn, with her wonderful husband, Jason!

And James, with his lovely wife, Kim (holding a rather new Sawyer)!

A mom is doubly blessed when her children pick spouses that are truly gifts from God! :)

And then there are my wonderful sisters, who are all great moms too!!! (Between the four of us, we've contributed 13 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; a pretty productive bunch!)

And finally, my mighty man.

The one who encourages and loves me (and our children) and is such a Godly head of our home!

Ruth Bell Graham said, “As a mother, my job is to take care of the possible and trust God with the impossible.”

Well said. And easier said than always done!

Happy Mother's Day!!!

double winner!

What a lucky girl I am!! Well, I'm certainly a blessed girl, all the time. But this week, I've been *lucky* too!!!

On Thursday of last week, Sinta from Pink Pincushion, e-mailed me to say I'd won her blogiversary giveaway! I was so excited! And she was fast, too . . . I had that package on TUESDAY! (She did a lot better getting her stuff out, than I did mine! LOL!) I really *wish* I could show you pictures of what she sent, but, alas . . . no camera. But you can click HERE and see what she offered/sent! It was some really fun, fun, fun stuff!!! The tea towels are so cute and already hanging in my kitchen. What a great idea for a hostess gift! The Artful Blogging magazine is fascinating. I'd never heard of it before and I don't know why. It's full of beautiful images! And I love the darling little thread spools . . . I'll find a way to incorporate them into my decor!

Lucky, non? Oiu!! But wait, there's MORE!

On Tuesday, Mel from Mel's Own Place, e-mailed me to say I'd won *her* giveaway, too!! She had a shop hop giveaway (see HERE), and I was the lucky recipient of a darling charm pack of Tweet Tweet by Keiki! You can see it in her post HERE! While you're there, you really should read about her adventures in shop-hopping! She's a lot of fun to read.

So. I'm a lucky girl! Add to all that, it's FRIDAY!!! Yeay! I'm thankful, too!

stash busting for a good cause aka Fabrics For Fall . . .

I don't think the amount of my *stash* is out of control. But the storage of it certainly *is* out of control, as can be seen . . .
At one point, just before we moved into the RV, I had a bit of a system going. You can sort of make it out in this one . . .
See?? On the bottom there? Everything was folded nicely and at one point, I think I even had some color system working. All my charm packs are {were} even nicely stacked together. All-in-all, it was an okay system, especially since I knew this was for RV living and had to be compact

I'm not sure when it grew out of control . . .
But I know I need to regain some semblance of order, so I can easily find things like all the pretty shades of orange fat quarters I impulsively collected this past fall . . .
Chances are pretty good that there are *some* -- like maybe two, possibly three, or perhaps a dozen (?!?!) fat quarters in the bin o'fabrics I don't really need or even LIKE!

Can you imagine such a thing?
I'm pretty sure most of you can!

I have a solution. One that will help bust my stash, take care of some of the clutter, AND do a really nice thing for a really good cause.

My friend over at Seams Sew Simple posted about it earlier this week. She is an educator and she's been working, along with other teachers, coaching teachers on different Indian reservations. Lately she's been working at the Rosebud Indian Reservation and has met a Lakota woman, Marion, who really has a heart for her students and will be working to teach them fabric crafts in the fall. Funding being what it is, fabric will be very hard to come by. DocSly has come up with "Fabrics For Fall," a different kind of giveaway . . . one where you giveaway some fabric to help others.

Can you spare a couple of fat quarters? Who knows what a difference in might make in the life of a young student (or better yet, students)?!?!?

The address to send your fat quarters to is:

Marion Running Horse
PO Box 379
St Francis, South Dakota 57572-0379

Piece & goodwill!

living in the wilderness...day 1

Not that this is the first day we're living in the wilderness.

Not that we're really living *in* the wilderness. Just the woods. Acres and acres of woods: 109 to be exact.

So it's not our first day, it's more like our 150th day (to be exact). And there are some things I've come to realize that I feel compelled to share.

We have water and electricity. And that's about it. No cable, no phone (except for cell) and no Internet.

Don't think I didn't hear that collective gasp when I said no Internet. I made that very same gasp when I first thought about it! The phone lines, the cable TV I can live without. No Internet? Oh the HORROR!

It's okay. We do have Internet up here. Just not the way most folks get it. We don't have cable, DSL or even the primitive dial up (remember, no phone lines). What we do have is a little credit card sized wireless modem. Through Verizon.

It works pretty darn good, but it has its limits. Both in the speeds it processes and the amount of data I can upload/download in a given month without incurring excessive overage fees.

Uh oh.

You don't think about how many megabytes your blogger pictures are, you just upload 'em, right? Just watch whatever you want on You Tube or Hulu! Download your e-mail to you laptop and then turn around a send a BILLION pictures of the most *darling* grandson in the whole world ever. Ummm, nope. Not any more!

It's why, typically, my posts are photo-less on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. Because I'm home using the cc modem, and not wanting to incur those pesky (hefty) additional charges (again).

So. That's one thing about living in the wilderness. You really shouldn't upload pictures to your blog. (I know, it makes me laugh too!) Tomorrow, I'll share something else. With pictures.

Hasta manana!

:)

a final look back at the day . . .

Listen. I know that blog entries with pictures are more fun, but I included lots of links that *do* have pictures, so stick it out. Okay? :)

I had a pleasant afternoon; I took advantage of Quilting Gallery's blog resources and checked out quilt blogs from around the country. I peeked in and out of about thirty or so; made comments and some friends! It really is a terrific resource for both quilt blogs and quilt shops . . . to check it out you can either hit the button on the right side or, to go directly to the directory, click here. How easy is that?!? Maybe you'll make some new friends too! Tell 'em I said, "Hey!"

Another fun thing I stumbled on today? Silk-Dyed Eggs {aka TIE-Dyed!} from the Our Best Bites blog. You simply must check this out. I can't wait to hit the thrift store tomorrow and find some wacky silk ties! I'm gonna have me some art-deco eggs this year for Easter! :) I enjoy this blog even though it's not a quilting blog. Shhhhh, don't tell on me!

Yesterday I had read an interesting tidbit on Mama Spark's World blog about C&T Publishing. Now I believe I've mentioned a time or two thousand, how much I love books; I hated giving up my library (okay, it wasn't that bad, since I kept all my quilting books), and I've determined that I really *shouldn't* (which is different than won't) buy any new (or even gently used) books, quilting, cooking or otherwise. (Tell Mama Spark I said, "Hey!" too, please!)

So I was really psyched about this C&T thing. On March 10th, they introduced this reviewer program, through C&T Creative Troupe. You apply to become a member. It's not a difficult process; they want to know your name, your address, the name of your blog (if you've got one), the craft(s) you prefer, the name and birth date of your first born (j/k), and do on. Ah, and they want to see pictures of or links to some of your 'best' work -- their words, not mine. I just showed 'em what I'd done, which is not a considerable amount.

Then they e-mail you back within five business days (or five hours, as it was in my case) with your member number! And do you know what that entitles you to? Among other great (I'm sure) things, it allows you to get an e-book to download, read and review. FOR FREE! Every TWO weeks! This is awesome news to me! It changes my world! I requested my first one today . . . My Whimsical Quilt Garden. I can't wait to check it out! I'll add the C&T button to my blog manana!

That really was a happy find for me. Happies on Fridays are like extra-special hugs. I had a happy when I checked out my son's facebook and found he'd posted a video of Sawyer. I watched it over and over and over! I wish I could successfully link to it, so you could watch it over and over and over, too. LOL! Hey, since I *can't* link to it, you can humor me here! :)

But the happiest moment of the day came as I was driving down the road, heading home. I had the sunroof open and was just enjoying the drive and the knowledge that it was the weekend and that the sun was warm, when all of a sudden, it hit me.

It was as if all the trees had been collectively holding their breath, waiting for this first beautiful, warm & sunny day. And when it came, they could hold it no more and with a *WHOOSH* they exhaled and their branches -- seemingly bare just yesterday -- were filled with tiny, unfurling, green leaf buds . . . and the promise of pink and red and purple blossoms . . . and their limbs stretched to the sun as if to say, thank You!

And it filled the air with the promise of new life, and my heart with unspeakable joy. The kind of joy that comes only from the Lord Almighty. I think it's so appropriate that we celebrate the risen Savior during the season of Spring. Our Hope springs eternal, and new life He brings.

He is why I can count it all joy!!

:)

happy, happy . . . joy, joy!

I had a very interesting e-mail today . . . it was from an advertiser who thought their products might be of interest to my 'readers' and asked me to take a look at their websites to see if I also though their products might make good giveaways on my blog! How funny! What's even more amusing to me is that the three sites they gave me are all three cooking/kitchen product websites! LOL! Well, while I predominantly talk about quilting, I do love to cook (in fact, I'll share my recipe for sugar free easy cheesecake tomorrow), so I'm going to consider their offer! Yay!

Tonight, Todd & I are taking my sf easy cheesecake to Jocelyn and Jason's home for dinner! I haven't seen my baby girl in ages, so I'm very excited. Plus I get to see Princess Leia! She's such a darling looking (if not acting) pussycat. I have to get my cat lovin' in when I can!

Some interesting things going on in blog land . . .

Julie, over at jaybird quilts, has a listing of all the quilt blogs having give aways that she knows about! How awesome is that? You can simply go to her blog and you've got your one-stop resource! Check out the current listing here.

Rachel, at p.s. i quilt, is giving away a free blog makeover! Isn't that fun??? Check it out here.

Brooke, at Everyday Bailey, is celebrating her darling baby's first birthday! Happy birthday sweet girl!!!

And Amy, from Diary of a Quilter, went on her first-ever quilt retreat this past weekend, too! It sounds like she had almost as much fun as I did on mine!

And lastly, for today, Heather at A La Mode fabric, is celebrating her blog turning one year old. And she is doing it in *style*! She's got two awesome giveaways; check it out here.

So . . . just a few fun things happening out there. Stay tuned for more info on the potential giveaway!!! Whooohooo!

flash . . .

Ok. I think I have this the way I want it. The blocks in my header graphic are actually photos of a BOM I did . . . last year (?) that is a UFO. I went with a new background; I felt I needed something a little plainer, with all the color/direction in the header graphic.

The three column look is nice; but it leaves me with a lot of white space down towards the end! I need to find things to fill it up. Probably won't be difficult!

I was *so* disappointed that only my blogspot blogs made it through the transition. None of the other blogs I keep up with made it. That's WRONG! Ah well, I'll figure it out. The one I noted right away, "Chickens in the Road", I had the address memorized, and added it right back in. Off the top of my head, I can't remember what other ones there were; just that they had interested me at some point or I wouldn't have added them. *sigh* I guess that's the price I pay for progress!

I'll just have to count it all joy! LOL! Speaking of James, this little gem was the message on yesterday's calendar block:

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17

I sure won't argue it.

:)

stuff . . .

**Update** Yes, I've already changed the skin again [and again and again and again] and have changed font colors back [and forth]. It may happen some more. [It did happen again. and again. and some more again.] I am a woman, after all! :)

Yesterday, in honor of Groundhog's Day, I decided to play around with the look of my blog. I have really wanted a three-column look for a while, but there's no "plug & play" template; you've got to work for it. After a lot of searching, and then creating a tester blog, and then a lot of sighing, deleting, downloading and reloading, I found that the best set of instructions for changing the html from a 2- to 3-column blog are found at The Cutest Blog on the Block. Once I got that set up and into place, I played around with 'skins' for a while . . . I'm not set on what is in place, because it means I have to go back and make a lot of font color changes in all my old posts in order for them to be visible on the brown page.

I just don't know. I just don't.

Have you ever seen the movie, Groundhog's Day? It's so funny! Can you imagine getting up day after day after day, and having it be the same day? And you're the only one who knows??? It would be either incredibly mind-numbing and insane, or, like Bill finally figures out in the end, each day would be another opportunity to get it right. A present.

Which is what today is; a present from God to me. Another opportunity to get it right.

Thank You!

:)

reading, writing . . . and re-reading . . .

I really love to write. It's why I blog. Not so much of a journal or diary exercise (although it is that), but as an outlet to write. I've written stories since I was a young girl. I especially enjoyed writing reports on books I'd read. I made my way through my year at Ole Miss by writing papers . . . for others. For crying out loud, I was a journalism major! I also wrote lots of short stories in college. Not to be published or for notoriety, but for the sheer pleasure of expressing myself, my thoughts, and my very wild imagination with the written word.

The thing is, I am also an avid, nearly unquenchable reader. Which means I understand the importance of a well-written work. I know what I like to read, and I know how difficult it is to read a book, even a paragraph--I can forgive the occasional poorly structured sentence--that is not well-written. It hurts my head.

I started this blog on September 1, 2003. That means I'm in my seventh year with this same blog! It's come a long way, as has my diligence for writing in it. Over the course of seven years, I've only logged in 187 posts, so my faithfulness to the pen (or keyboard, as the case may be) is not to be commended! As I've commented recently, I can either be living life, or commenting on it. It's tough to do both. And besides, writing--the way I want to be read--is WORK! No really; it's w-o-r-k. Not that I don't enjoy the work; just acknowledging the plain fact that it is, indeed, work. I think I've made my point.

All of that being said, from time-to-time I enjoy going back and reading old blog posts. I did just that yesterday, as I realized I was closing in on Post 200. I started back at the first entry and skipped and hopped through the last seven years. The scope of what I wrote about varied. Sometimes I've blogged about my faith and my walk with Jesus; where I've struggled and where He's delivered me. Often I share tidbits from my day; from the spectacular to the mundane. For a (brief) period of time I logged my exercising and dieting. Ugh. (Now I have a *private* blog for that sort of thing.) For a while I blogged about cooking through the Mitford cookbook. It took me two recipes to realize that was a no-go. I've blogged about quilting, cooking, family, and reading; things I've enjoyed and, well, things I haven't enjoyed quite so much.

On my first day, I blogged about pear dumplings. It was the very first time I'd made them and in the course of making them, I found a cool gadget I'd gotten from my Grandpa Wadleigh's kitchen when he passed. Now, it's not likely that I'll forget the dumplings or playing with the pastry frame; but because I wrote about it while it was fresh on my mind, I was able to capture nuances about that day that I might not have been able to remember seven years later. How sweet it is to go back and read that entry and be transported to that day with all its wonderful tastes and smells and sensations. Lovely.

It was nearly a year later when I blogged again. Lemme 'splain. You see I journal, too. I like the physical action of writing, with a pen, on paper. I don't care for redundancy, so typing in the blog what I've already written, seems like a waste of time, effort and energy. Who cares where it's recorded, as long as it *has* been recorded. So when I wrote on paper, I was less likely to make a blog entry. Which I regret, now, but it's water under the bridge; milk that's been both spilled and cleaned up already, so there's no point in spending any more time on it. Except to say that I can't carry years and years worth of journals with me on the RV to read back though. (At least not if I'm going to keep my Tea Time magazines and all my quilting books. Priorities.)

As I was saying, the next time I blogged was July, 2004, where my thoughts mostly centered on Jocelyn. She worked that summer in Hague, Virginia, helping my sister who'd just had her fourth baby. We also purchased Jocelyn's first car, as Joc was getting ready to head to Blue Mountain, Mississippi, as a college freshman. I'm glad I chronicled some of my bittersweet thoughts of Jocelyn's transition from high-schooler to college student. She was my first bird to fly the coop! September and October had a few posts, mostly regarding my (ongoing) battle with weight. And then the blog fell silent again . . . (no mystery there, huh?) . . .

Until for some reason I picked it up again in May of 2005. I blogged off an on through the year until September, when I switched to Xanga. I fell to peer pressure; all the cool kids were doing it. In December I went back to good ol' blogger.com and meticulously cut and pasted all my Xanga entries to this blog. In my final entry of the year, December 30, I touched on my dilemma of blogging vs. journaling. How appropriate!

In 2006 I posted just as irregularly, but I had figured out how to post pictures to my entries. Pictures made a nice difference. They make a good break between paragraphs. And since a picture paints a thousand words, using pictures allows me to cut back on my typing time. Haha. I crack me up! Notice this entry has no pictures. Heh.

The year of our Lord, 2007, has the fewest posts scattered through it since I'd started this thing in '03. And most of those posts started with, "I need to blog more . . . " Oh well! I picked up the pace just a little in '08. Wait, no I really did not. I went from a skimpy nine entries in '07 to a whopping FOURTEEN entries in '08. Wow and blow me away. In 2008 I started sharing bits and pieces of my quilting. I like the ability to photograph my projects in their various stages and post them for posterity. It's especially nice when I'm working on a quilt that is a gift for another.

Last year I finally got a bit more in the blogging groove. I fancied up the page, brought in a pretty little template, and added gadgets to my blog. I played with color and layout. I started reading other blogs and posting links and sharing stuff, like my favorite websites. I'm not sure why, but I was a little more compelled to blog. Well, during the second half of the year, anyway. Errr, well, during three months of the year, I mean! I started off with a bang in August and trucked right along into September and October, but waned in November and December. I wonder why? It couldn't have been the fact that we moved . . . from our brick & mortar home to our fifth wheel. Or the holidays . . . and our last Thanksgiving in our Hunter Road home. Or Christmas and the whirlwind of activity--parties, shopping, church events, etc.--that it brings.

No, it couldn't possibly have been any of those things . . . :)

A new year, a new leaf, and new resolve to express myself more regularly and consistently. For no one's benefit than my own. So that in seven months or in another seven years, I can sit down and re-live the sweet moments of 2010. Sitting at the picture window watching the birds and animals, with my best friend & husband. Holding precious Sawyer Graham Panter for the first time. Watching my children and their spouses continue to grow in God's love and grace; and love each other. Seeing God's hand in the ministry as it grows and is used to His glory. Spending time with family and friends. Chronicling this amazing, God-given journey.

And expressing myself in my favorite manner (other than pantomime); in writing.

The end.

:)

post script: I'll post pictures again tomorrow. Sheesh!

simplicity on earth . . .

There's so much I want to share and say; but in order to get it all down, I'd have to be sitting here 24/7 in order to catch it all! Of course, the conundrum of that is, if I were sitting at the computer 24/7, I wouldn't be living the life that I want to capture & share. Same ol', same ol'. :)

I was up early enough to catch this yesterday's sunrise. The sky was mottled with steel gray clouds, so the sun streaked through it in pinks and oranges. Quite beautiful. It struck within me this continued pressing for simpler life - simpler eating, simpler routine, simpler belongings . . .

Regardless of all our careful preparation and winterizing, the water connection from the source to the RV froze Saturday. Thankfully we'd filled the freshwater tank, and it's not been too big a deal. It has emphasized to me how much for granted I take my fresh water source! I was very conscious each time I turned on the tap for a drink, a wash, a rinse . . . even to flush! I think I'll get a couple gallon jugs of water and put them up, just to make coffee and oatmeal without worrying about having enough water for showers! :)

My friend, Sondra, and I headed to Franklin, Tennessee, over the weekend for a trip to Whole Foods Market. This may what prompted my 'back-to-basic' longings this morning! I really, REALLY want to go to a less-processed foods, more fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains, diet. No. Scratch diet; lifestyle! To that end, Todd & I purchased a small George Foreman grill and a two-person Crock-Pot. Tonight for dinner (which took 20 minutes, tops) we had lean pork chops which I rubbed with a homemade rub, on the grill -- they took less than 7 minutes to cook, and they were *wonderful*! Tonight I'll put the steel cut oats in the crock pot and we'll have yummy oatmeal ready to go in the morning! Yummy!

Todd finally figured out where the water line was frozen and got it thawed! YAY! I'm telling you, you don't realize how much water you use in day-to-day life until it's not readily available! Tonight as I ate dinner and thanked God for His provision with every bite, I was also thanking Him for each drink of water I took. :) He is good.

This morning neither Todd nor I wanted to get up; it was too cold!! When I finally stuck my foot out of the bed, I knew something was not quite right! All the heat vents were ice cold, so I took a peek at the thermostat . . . rut roh! It was at forty-five degrees! Luckily we had filled our backup tank last night, and Todd was able to hook it up and get the heat cranking within minutes. Life in the RV will *never* be boring! :)

I had planned to take down Christmas decorations and the tree today. Nope, didn't happen! By the time we got home this afternoon, and I was able to wash dishes and we had lunch, I just wasn't interested. Instead, I did the Turbo-Jam 20-minute workout and the P90 resistance training. Go me!!

Tonight I'll shower (really enjoying the hot *and* the water), and I will finish up the chicken feet on Julia's wall hanging. In searching online for the best template to use for them, I came across a new blog -- Chickens in the Road. It's wonderful! The author moved to a very rural and small town in West Virginia, and is living a simple life, sharing her experiences with all. It really struck a chord with me . . . perhaps because I have ties and roots in West Virginia, or perhaps because of my longings for living a simpler, more rustic life. Whatever the case, I really like her blog and website and encourage others to check it out!

This afternoon, over our coffee/hot chocolate, Todd and I sat at the big window, watching the birds flit in and about until the deer moved in. We are such a pair; sitting together at the table with all the lights off, pulling binoculars up to get a better look! I like our life.

Shower then quilt . . . life goes on . . . tomorrow it's back to the real world again! By God's good grace, I'm ready!

Ciao!

:)
