Hodgepodge Patchwork Tuesday - Welcome Wall Hanging and Giveaway!

Why would you make a "Welcome" wall hanging?  Because you want to welcome your friends and family into your home or place of business.  I needed one for my quilting shop. This was a fun wall hanging to make.  I just had some "free form" fun drawing and cutting out the letters and flowers.

First I chose my center white fabric.  Then I sewed a black and white border fabric around the white fabric.  I cut the black and white fabric askew, to kind of give it an off center look.

I drew out some letters on the wrong side of lite heat and bond, so they would come out facing the correct way.  Then I ironed the heat and bond to the black fabric and let it cool. Then I cut out each letter, pealed the paper off, and placed the letters on the white fabric.  When they were all in place. I pressed with the iron to adhere them to my fabric. This is a raw edge applique  method.
I did the same thing with the cornflower.  You could draw any type of flower.  I chose the cornflower, because I can draw it.  Daisies are easy to draw too. I made three flowers in different sizes. I used a black dotted fabric for the centers of the flowers. Picked a place that was eye pleasing and pressed them onto the fabric. Note that the bottom flower overlaps into the border.  This helps the off center look of the whole wall hanging.
When I quilted the wall hanging I used a poly batting, so the cornflowers puffed out a little bit.  It gives it a 3D look when you stitch on the edge of them and stitch a denser stitching in the background.

I added a sleeve on the top when I did the binding.  I pushed a wood dowel thru' the sleeve and used black ric rac to make a hanger with ties hanging down on the sides.

Drawing will be Monday, June 20, 2011 at 6pm CST!

So Pat when you see this, email me!  Marcia@craftysewing.com

Several of you that follow me are listed as a non-reply blogger.  Here's how to know, if I did not send you  a reply to your comment, than you need to either leave an email in your comment or on your blog settings, somewhere you can add an email/  That way when you leave a comment, then bloggers can reply to your comment.   Most importantly you can win!  I have seen where some bloggers don't let that person win, because there is no contact information.  But I will post it and hope that the person sees this post and contacts me.  So Pat email me, please.  Do you know Pat?  Let her know she won too. Thanks!

I too am a new follower. I too will have to give my grandmothers credit for starting me on the road of quilting, sewing, crocheting and crafting. My mom's mom taught me to sew on an old treadle machine when I was 7 and I am now in my 50s so that is over 40 years of crafting for me. :) I hope I have inspired others to also express their creativeness too. And even if I don't win the prize, I just wanted to say those baskets are gorgeous! And you have inspired me to give them a try sometime. Thanks. :)

I've always had a creative bent I guess. Mom recognised that in me and made up a craft box for me. She would put yarn, pipe cleaners, toilet paper rolls, tissue paper, gum wrappers...just about anything she thought I could use to create. I used that box for years!!!! My first sewing 'lessons' were on lace up cards; then she gave me the cut off hems when she hemmed slacks...lots of polyester in those days LOL! I started my first patchwork with those and all by hand....I thank her for encouraging that spark for making things with my hands and imagination.

Thanks again for all the kind wishes and prayers for my Mom.  We are still at the Hospital and my Mom is doing better.  Please keep us in your prayers.

Hodgepodge Patchwork Tuesday - What are 2 Things a Quilter needs in the Spring?

A quilter needs a quilted tissue holder and a fabric cover for her hanging planters!

This is the link to the Photo Gallery where the tutorial on how to make your own fabric cover for your hanging planters. Click on Quilts in the Garden Photo.

Follow along with the photos and learn how to make the quilted tissue holder here....

Cut a quilted piece of fabric 6" X 7" . Or wrap the fabric around your tissue package to make sure it will fit.
Cut 2 binding strips for the 6" sides.
Stitch the binding on the wrong side of your quilted fabric.
Press out flat first.
Then flip over and press binding around to the front side of your quilted fabric.
Embroidery stitch the binding in place on both sides.
Zig Zag stitch the 7 inch sides - the raw edges,
Press the bound edges together with the right side (the pretty side) on the inside, as shown in the photo, so that they meet in the center.
Stitch both ends about 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Stitch twice and Zig Zag the edges again.

Clip all four corners.
Turn right side out!
Press it nice a flat so the center meets.
This is a very simple project to make.  It took me about 20 minutes to make it and I was taking photos at the same time.   The little quilted tissue holder would make great get well gift.  Or just make one for yourself!

Spring Buds - May for Me - Means Taking Time for You!

Today's post is called Spring Buds - May for Me to give you more tidbits of information about the celebration and prizes.

The May for Me Celebration is all about taking the time to smell the roses - the spring buds!  You need to choose to take these minutes for yourself starting now.

Slow down your schedule a little.

Make positive changes that make you feel better.

Do something you like to do.

Enjoy small moments.

Smell the spring buds! (if you live in Wisconsin you are going to have to look hard for them - still COLD here)

Here is what I am going to do:
I love to sew.  I am choosing some sewing projects that I have been putting off, because I think I don"t have time to do them.  But if I set aside some time to do them, it will happen.  I am taking time for me! I call that Minutes for Me!

I recently participated in Project Quilting. I was afraid I would not have enough time to make the projects, because the winter months in the quilting business are exceptionally busy for me! So I really had to manage my time to get everything done, including customer's quilts and  my daily stuff from wash, dishes, and cleaning and cooking and time for my family.  I found I was happier when I was taking time to do creative sewing projects.  It made all the other stuff in my daily life easier.

So when I was emailing back and forth with Tonya, we decided we needed to share our idea of the May for Me Celebration and make it an event so that others would smell the spring buds too! Tonya is going to do a sew along as part of the celebration.

So join us in celebrating taking a few minutes everyday just for yourself!
