Indoor Climbing Wall Idea

Thought I'd pass along this great idea for a kids playroom.   Found at Kajja.   Made of v shaped wood pieces.   Sand, paint and securely fastened with screws to the wall.   In new home construction it would be ideal to re-enforce the wall before installation.   Little boys especially, would love playing on this.   Read more at Kajja.

Handmade Rag Rug Tutorial

Years ago I found an eight foot circular, handmade Rag Rug for sale at a craft store.   It was beautiful, unfortunately, it was also sold.   Since then I have often thought it would be fun to try and make my own.   Today I finally found a free tutorial.   It looks easy and fun to do.   Luckily, I still have my collection of scrap fabric.  I'll be giving this a try.   Visit Sugar Bee for the free Video Tutorial.

diy Urban Outfitters Inspired Recycled Magazine Mirror

Urban Outfitter's is one of my favorite stores to shop with my daughter.

There is a 70's retro feel which sends me back in time to memories long forgotten.
Shoes and clothes I wore in 7th and 8th grade.
Cool stuff that would look great with my Ikea collection.

This recycled magazine mirror looks like something I could have picked up on my
last visit to Gateway.   In fact I remember making paper beads, rings and chains
some time around 1975.   ( My sisters and I also folded gum wrappers into chains and
decorated our bedroom walls with candy bar wrappers.   Those were the days!

Thanks to Laura from Fleeting Thing and her easy-to-follow tutorial,
you and I can make an Urban Outfitters inspired, retro - recycled magazine mirror.
I love it!   Inexpensive, easy and fun to make.

Visit Laura, her tutorial is great!

diy project - Samantha's faux suzani pillow

Using felt, fabric glue and a pre-made pillow cover you can create a suzani pillow
for only a few dollars.

Suzani, a form of traditional embroidered textile from Central Asia , now adorn the sofas
and beds of many Americans.   Suzani shapes - like wheels, flowers, leaves and scrolling
borders - are showing up on everything.   The bright colors and intricate motifs go with
modern and traditional decorating styles.

has a series of articles and provides the free downloadable templates
for creating the suzani shapes.   All you have to do is trace, cut and glue.

For this project you will need the following materials:
  • A 24" square pillow form.   (A smaller pillow can be used but you will have to adjust the template accordingly.)
  • A 24" square solid color pillow cover ( a felt pillow cover would be best).
( Instructions for making this pillow cover are posted here )

  • White felt, at least 22 inches square
  • Fuchsia felt, at least 10 inches square
  • Pink felt, at least 10 inches square
  • Yellow felt, about 10 inches square
  • Fabric glue (fusible web interfacing can be used as an alternative)
  • A piece of paper at least 22 inches square.

Download and print the following templates and
follow the instructions in each article for creating your felt pieces.

Center the medium (pink) suzani flower in the center of the large (fushia) suzani flower
and adhere with fabric glue.

Find the center point of your pillow front and glue
the large flower so that is centered on the pillow.

Place the suzani circle (white) around the flower and center.
Fold over half of the circle and apply glue.

Lay the circle back down and adhere the pillow cover.
Do the same with the second half of the white circle.

Place one small pink flower and two yellow flourishes in each corner of the pillow.
Glue down each piece.

Allow the glue to dry.
Set the pillow up to see if any edges need more glue.

You are finished.   Enjoy your custom pillow!

A Playroom in Brooklyn

A family in Brooklyn commissioned Designer, Jen Talbot to design their children's playroom.

This is what she came up with.   Wool Felt is a wonderful medium, soft, warm and a perfect
creative fiber.     I love her design and I'm sure the children in this family do too.

What do you think?
